I am going to keep my eye on this, once I have the money and time needed I will build a PC, one time I was having so much fun playing the Black mesa mod for HL1 then my laptop overheated and shut off, so disappointed I couldn't keep playing.

I mostly do builds on Newegg exclusively since PCPartpicker doesn't list combo deals. I just use it on the side to see if a lot of money could be saved on a build when buying from different locations.

Also, an i7 won't do anything for gaming over an i5. But since I know you want to do video editing, it would be worth it. Make sure to pick a k-version and a Z75/Z77 board though so you could overclock it at some point.

If you want I can suggest some parts. Just need your budget :P

Would love that Basti! I'm really hoping to get a decent gaming + good video editing rig somewhere around or under 1,000 USD, cheaper is better though ofc. If it helps, I don't care about running any games on max settings or anything. I would like though, if possible, to run smoothly at 60 FPS without turning down game graphics so far that it looks like I'm playing Nintendo 64 Tongue

1000$ will get you something pretty beastly.

Here goes some more questions then:

- What kinda peripherals do you also need? Monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers n stuff
- Does the OS have to be included in the price? Or can you get it for cheap somewhere?
- Will you pick up the CPU locally at a Microcenter?
- What program(s) will you be mostly using for video editing? This will affect GPU choice as NVidia cards will help with rendering speeds in certain programs. If your editing isn't all that heavy it wouldn't matter that much though.
- Is it OK to be above 1000$ and just dropping below it after mail-in rebates (sometimes there's some pretty good deals going on with that) or does it need to be below that before mail-in rebates? Not that it matters that much, it's mostly something that helps squeeze in better parts at 800ish and lower budgets.
- Shall the parts be multi-GPU compatible or not? Copy paste on this from something I posted on GT some time ago:
Spoiler:
Do you want components that are multi-GPU compatible?

Pros of Crossfire/SLI:
- Overall better bang for buck
- cheap upgrade path for the future (just drop in a 2nd GPU once your single one doesn't perform like you want to anymore). Basically it's just nice to have the option.

Cons:
- Power consumption
- Sometimes heat and noise issues
- Inconsistent performance scaling in different games
- Potential stability/driver issues that may require a lot of fiddling, on the newest games CF/SLI might not work at all in the beginning
- If you use this way to upgrade instead of getting a new single GPU (and maybe selling your old one) you'll probably hang on to older tech longer.
- Slightly higher initial price for a compatible MoBo and stronger PSU.

I personally prefer and recommend single card setups.

-I don't really need a keyboard/mouse (I'm using a shitty 14 USD keyboard atm and technically it works fine! :D) but I do need speakers and a monitor. I also need a case

sBastiZH wrote:- Does the OS have to be included in the price? Or can you get it for cheap somewhere?

-Would like if the OS was included in the price, I'm not really sure if I can grab it cheap elsewhere.

sBastiZH wrote:- Will you pick up the CPU locally at a Microcenter?

-Yeah, the Microcenter in Cincinnati is only like 2.5 hours away, not a long drive.

sBastiZH wrote:- What program(s) will you be mostly using for video editing? This will affect GPU choice as NVidia cards will help with rendering speeds in certain programs. If your editing isn't all that heavy it wouldn't matter that much though.

-I'm not 100% certain on the software I'll be using for video editing - right now I'm thinking Adobe Premiere Elements 11. I'm not going to be doing anything super hardcore in my videos or anything, though.

sBastiZH wrote:- Is it OK to be above 1000$ and just dropping below it after mail-in rebates (sometimes there's some pretty good deals going on with that) or does it need to be below that before mail-in rebates? -Mail-in rebates are fine. Honestly though that 1000 USD was just the upper bound - if you know about deals that are sufficient for less, that'd be great. If I had to suggest an 'ideal' number I guess it would be around 800-900?? But again, feel free to go up to 1000, that's really the limit.

sBastiZH wrote:- Shall the parts be multi-GPU compatible or not?

-I don't really see myself getting a second GPU honestly. I guess whichever setup is cheaper will suit me just fine.

damn. In 4.5 hours you could get through Switzerland xD
I have like 15-20 minutes. Longest way I have to do often is like 45 minutes for my part time job.

Since you're already going there anyways, I'm checking if I can do the whole build on Microcenter. Looks pretty good so far, Newegg would have some slightly better deals here and there, but for the convenience I'd try to pick up as many components as possible at the same place.

Re: My Little Genchat #4: Trixie is best pony

Can't do with only Microcenter. So:

CPU: i7-3770k, pickup @ Microcenter, 230$

CPU cooler: Xigmatek Gaia @Newegg 21$

MoBo: either ASROck Z77 Pro3 pickup @Microcenter 95$, or the Z75 Pro3 @Amazon for 85$

RAM: Either a Crucial 2x4GB 1333MHz kit for pickup @Microcenter for 37$ or a ADATA 2x4GB 1600MHz kit @Newegg for 36$. Speed doesn't really matter, you won't get any better real world performance on 1600MHz compared to 1333MHz. I would've liked to go with 16gigs for the editing works, but can't do on the budget. That's something for later when you have a spare 40 bucks.

GPU: XFX HD 7870 @NCIX 225$ before 20$ mail-in rebate; the same card would be 5$ more expensive on Newegg, but would help so you're not buying from 3 different shops. A 7870 can max out most games that are out nowadays with a few exceptions. The NVidia offerings I could recommend go over budget.

HDD: Toshiba 500GB 7200RPM @Microcenter 60$

Optical Drive: Some LG burner @Microcenter or some Samsung burner @Newegg, both 16$

PSU: Microcenter just doesn't have anything decent in the 60-70$ price range in stock. There are some good OCZ units for 40$, but those are all refurbished/recertified which I usually try to avoid. Everything else from there I would recommend is at least 90$, so it will have to be Newegg. Antec Neo Eco 520, @Newegg 55$, great unit for the price. There's just no power cord coming with that one, but you should have one around I guess.

Case: Zalman Z5 Plus @Newegg 40$ before 10$ mail in rebate. Pretty damn unbeatable for the price. If you don't fancy the design at all, we can look for something else.

OS: Windows 8 64bit or Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit @NCIX 88$, everywhere else it's more expensive.

Monitor: Hanns-G HL229DPB 1080p @Newegg 100$ (but only for 3 more days). 21.5'' is a bit on the small side IMO but for a PC monitor still OK. Budget won't allow a big upgrade here if I don't turn GPU down a notch.

Sound: Logitech Z313 @Newegg 45$. Nothing I would use for serious music listening or the likes, but Logitech have some pretty decent stuff in the budget segment.

Everything together is right at 1000$ and there's a total of 30$ mail-in rebates coming with it. There is one possible trade-off that could be done: Drop the GPU down a tier (a HD 7850 would still deliver very solid performance) (which would also allow going with a weaker, cheaper PSU, but I wouldn't recommend this, since it would limit your future upgrade possibilities) and for that getting 16gigs of RAM (just pick the kit twice) and a 1TB HDD instead of the 500GB we have here.
I would go with the stronger GPU for now, since RAM and HDDs are things that can always be added in later easily (also SSDs).

The whole PC will be overclockable for some free extra performance. The cooler on the GPU is not the greatest but some moderate clock increases will still work and for stock settings it will easily suffice.

This is a big help Basti, thanks! The 21.5'' monitor is fine, I'm used to working on my 19" on my laptop anyways :P

I'm not too worried about overclocking the GPU, as IIRC a lot of video editing software is more CPU-intensive rather than GPU-intensive, and I really don't care about running games at uber high settings at any rate. Maybe my standards are kind of low since I've been gaming on laptops since high school, but whatevs!

EDIT: How big of a difference is there between the XFX Radeon HD 7870 and the HD 7850? It'd be cool to save that extra 40 USD, even if I don't pick up more RAM or storage space right away.

I've been watching the episodes of Digimon Fusion Hunters and i noticed how lazy the writers got in one of the episodes.

They kind of stole the plot for the Polar Express and combined it with the plot for the Digimon Tamers movie with Locomon.

Disapproving

GPU overclocking would be for extra gaming performance and I would recommend it, the current AMD lineup has a LOT of overclocking headroom. You can also overclock the CPU here which would not help in games but increase performance in editing software. While the cooler is only 20$ it's a very good performer. You'll reach 4GHz+ on it easily, around 4.5GHz is very possible too I think.
If you need some help with that too at some point, just ask.

Click yourself through the benchmarks here. There is a very noticeable difference between the 2, but just for reference, @1080p the 7850 can still play the likes of BF3 and Crysis on high settings with very playable framerates (40FPS on average), most other games will run better of course. And you should be able to overclock the 7850 close to stock 7870 performance (especially since the Sapphire 7850 I linked has a very good aftermarket cooler on it already).

Hmm. I'm kind of leaning slightly towards the 7870 now. It seems like it might last me a little bit longer in terms of being able to some newer/better-looking games, and I guess $40 would be a fair trade for that. Haven't decided for sure yet.

Oh that reminds me, I should get to ordering that monitor soon before that deal's up!

Doubtful with Shout

I think Transformers prime was the first, and, so far, only Blu ray they've released, that I know of. Which is a shame

Yep, it's on sale on Amazon for 24 instead of 35. Apparently it's only available online, sense stores like Best buy, and Target aren't selling them.
